About the event
From heritage to the future
The Marcus Garvey Centre is much more than an event venue. Completed in 1931 as the headquarters of the Raleigh Bicycle Company and designed by the Nottingham architect T. C. Howitt, the building later became deeply connected with Nottingham’s African Caribbean community.
The ballroom was reopened in 1981 by the West Indian Cavaliers as a music venue and became known as the Marcus Garvey Ballroom, or “the Garvey”. It has since served generations of Nottingham’s Black and African Caribbean communities as a place for music, culture, celebration, community connection, education and social support.
The venue is named after Marcus Garvey, the Jamaican political activist, journalist and Pan-African leader whose legacy is associated with Black pride, self-determination, enterprise, cultural identity and international African unity. This event is both a celebration and a continuation of that legacy.
